2017년 7월 23일 맨체스터 시티로 이적한 다닐루이다. 우리나라에서 '닐멘'으로 굉장히 알려진 축구선수이다. '닐멘'의 의미가 좋은 것은 아니다. 맨체스터 시티의 팬인 본인에게는 조금 애매한 말이다. 하지만 본인은 맨체스터 시티의 선수인 다닐루를 응원한다. 다닐루는 FC산투스에서 활약으로 조금씩 이름을 알리기 시작했다. 그 때 당시 네이마르와 함께 뛰며 팀 리그 우승을 이끈 멤버이다. 2011년 7월에 FC포르투 이적이 결정되었다. 이적료는 1300만 유로이다. 하지만 FC산투스가 클럽월드컵에 참가하게 되어 이적은 2012년 1월로 연기되었다.

'닐멘'의 뜻

'닐멘'은 '주멘'으로부터 비롯되었다. 이 '주멘'은 박주영 선수를 비하하는 말이다. '주멘'은 주영과 아멘의 합성어이다. 아스날 소속 당시 박주영 선수는 필드에서 보다 벤치에 있었다. 경기에서 그가 벤치에 있지만 눈에 보이지 않는 무엇이 있다는 의미이다. 즉, 사람들은 박주영 선수가 부진하는 것을 '토템 축구의 창시'라고 말하고 모욕한 것이다. 지금에서는 박주영 선수의 클라스를 칭송하는 의미로 바뀌었다. 이것과 비슷하게 다닐루가 레알 마드리드에서 자주 벤치에 있었고 그가 벤치에 있을 때 이상하게도 그의 팀 성적이 굉장히 좋았다. 우리나라에서 사람들은 "그가 염력 수비를 한다."고 이야기 했다. 이 때부터 다닐루와 아멘의 합성어인 '닐멘'으로 불리기 시작했다.

FC포르투로 이적을 한 다닐루는 꾸준히 활약을 했다. 12-13 시즌 부터 14-15 시즌 까지 라이트백 주전자리를 확보했고 좋은 경기력을 보였다. 14-15 시즌에 레프트백 알렉스 산드루와 함께 양쪽 측면을 털었다. 심지어 바이에른 뮌헨을 상대로도 굉장한 활약을 보였다. 이런 꾸준한 활약을 통해서 2015년 3월 1일 레알 마드리드 CF로 이적을 확정지었다. 하지만 이적 후 활약이 점점 없어져 간다. 그리고 '닐멘'이라는 단어가 우리나라에서 사용되기 시작했다. 레알 마드리드에서 수비수로서 잦은 실수로 굉장히 주목을 받았다.

15-16 시즌 다닐루는 레알마드리드로 합류하게 되었다. 이적료는 3150만 유로이다. 그 때 당시 다닐루의 경쟁자는 레알 마드리드 유스 출신이며 스페인 국가대표 주전 다니 카르바할이었다. 15-16 프리시즌에서 적응하지 못하는 모습을 보였다. 개막전에 선발로 출전 했으나 수비 불안을 보이며 결국 카르바할과 교체되었다. 안타까운 것은 엘클라시코에서 최악의 활약을 하며 패배의 원인이 되었다. 계속되는 경기에도 나아지지 않았고 프리메라 리가 전반기 워스트 11에 들었다. 그리고 아틀레티코 마드리드와의 경기에서 마르셀루의 부상으로 레프트백을 서게 된다. 정말 이상한 것은 본인의 주 포지션인 라이트백 보다 레프트백에서 엄청난 활약을 하게 된다.

챔피언스리그 결승 아틀레티코 마드리드 경기에서 카르바할의 부상으로 다닐루가 투입 되었다. 15-16 시즌 전반적인 경기력과는 다르게 괜찮은 활약을 선보였다. 연장전 전반에 있었던 아틀레티코 마드리드의 역습에서 앙토니 그리즈만에게 정확한 태클을 성공시켜 공격을 차단했다. 그리고 승부차기에서 레알 마드리드는 승리하여 챔피언스리그를 우승하였다. 16-17 시즌에 들어와서 15-16 시즌보다는 나아진 경기력을 보였다. 마르셀루의 부상때문에 다닐루가 레프트백으로 출전하는 경기가 많았다. 왼쪽에서의 활약이 오른쪽 보다 더 낫기 때문에 예상치 못한 마르셀루의 백업자원이 되었다.
